Medicine

My background and qualifications

I qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1979. Between then and 1984 I trained in general medicine in the main hospitals in Tayside and then in digestive diseases at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

In 1984 I came to St Andrews to train in general practice with Dr George Caithness and partners. I enjoyed it tremendously and joined the practice as a partner in 1986.

In the late 1990s I became very interested in the use of the internet in medicine, which eventually led to my becoming the medical director of the newly-formed NetDoctor web site. To do this properly I had to give up being a full time GP.

In the event, all went well. NetDoctor has become the most successful such organisation in Europe and has sister sites in several European countries. Meantime I have kept up with family medicine through doing locums in many of the practices in Fife.

Private general practice is new in Scotland and I look forward to developing the services I can offer. I will be assisted in this by my wife, Anne, who is a registered nurse and midwife. You can find us by checking our contact information.

My qualifications are:

BSc (Medical Sciences) University of Edinburgh 1976
MB ChB (Medical degree) University of Edinburgh 1979
MRCP (Member of Royal College of Physicians) 1983
MRCGP (Member of Royal College of General Practitioners) 1985

I was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin) in 1999
